“[Vickers] acknowledges and highlights the difficulties for full-time workers who also care for a child with a chronic illness, discussing the experiences of feeling disconnected (from others who don’t understand); of the unacknowledged grief endured by these parents on an ongoing basis; of the cruelty and indifference of those around them – colleagues, friends, family; and of he “life service” support given to them.

“More importantly, perhaps, she also offers hope to those in this situation by creating and outlining a series of alternative futures to the ones currently anticipated … Again, Vickers enriches us, not only with the insights she proffers, but also with the novel ways of presenting those insights, using “data poems”, constructed diary entries (drawn from the stories reported to her, as well as the more traditional interview abstracts, researcher file notes, and such.

“Taken as a whole, this is a very important contribution to the understanding of the lives of those who are caring for someone (child or elder) with chronic illness. It is an important volume for all those scholars and professionals whose work touches oncaring for a dependent other. It is also a call to action that, hopefully, will be heard and heeded.” (Lamond, 2007).
